Downtown Portland: In 1845 when the two owners of the town
site, Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove, christened it "Portland",
hired the surveyor Thomas Brown to lay out a grid of 16 blocks, which
is now downtown Portland. This original subdivided area extended from
the river to Second Avenue and from Washington to Jefferson streets.
Portland's residents consider the Portland "Downtown" as
those neighborhoods where you can walk downtown within 15-20 minutes.
These Portland neighborhoods are all on the west side of the Willamette
River. These Portland neighborhoods includes the neighborhoods of
Downtown, Northwest District, Old Town/Chinatown, Pearl District,
and Goose Hollow (see below for more detailed descriptions of these
neighborhoods). The Northwest District and Goose Hollow are the only
areas with detached single family homes. All other neighborhoods in
the downtown area only offer condos and rowhouses (multifamily units).
The downtown Portland property values range from $200,000 to over
a million depending on the area and property type with condos providing
an affordable option for those seeking to live downtown.
