Portland's Pearl District: The Pearl District is located on
the north edge of downtown Portland. Buildings that once served the
city's industrial needs are steadily being converted into lofts. These
lofts are so popular that new loft-buildings are being built as all
the desirable warehouse have been converted to living units. The Pearl
District does not have any detached single-family homes. As a result
of the popularity of the area, in January 2003 prices in the Pearl
District condos sold for more than the luxury homes in Lake Oswego
and are the most expensive real estate in the metro area per square
foot. The Portland streetcar line connects the Pearl with downtown
and the Northwest District. With homes above and retail businesses
at street level, these efficient multi-use spaces fill up quickly.
The Pearl District is an artist's haven and home to many reputable
companies. Galleries are plentiful and open their doors on the First
Thursday of each month for the public to glimpse the vibrancy of local
creativity. The average Pearl District homes sell for $300,000 and
townhomes sell on average for over $500,000 and lofts can be found
for around $180,000.
